Colleen Starkey,
LICSW
Professional Background
I'm a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), professionally trained in adherent Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). In my work with clients, I rely upon my varied work experiences, striving always to bring a sense of curiosity, not judgment (a la Ted Lasso). I utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches, including but not limited to: dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness, relational therapy, solution-focused therapy, and contemporary psychodynamic psychoanalysis. Tailored for each client, I employ analogies and metaphors to achieve insights that are gained in therapy. Often the shadows in our lives are bigger than the objects themselves.
My graduate degrees are in Social Work and Public Administration from Columbia University. My career focus is supporting people in their various environments - people living in affordable housing, people working in human resources, and now - a mental health setting. My clinical experience includes individual, group settings, and in an emergency department setting. I hold certification to provide adherent DBT services, working with adolescents, their parents, and adults. Currently, I am participating in a contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy program to further develop my skill set. My professional goal is to become nationally certified in DBT by the end of 2025. In addition to providing therapy, I am also a board-certified clinical supervisor through Minnesota State University.
Personal Life and Interests
Outside of work, I enjoy the company of my dogs (who's a good doggie?!) and my husband. I occupy my time writing snail mail to friends and family, exercising, volunteering, traveling, and sharing silly dad jokes in hopes of brightening someone's day.
